Windows 10 support is ending – what businesses need to know

When is it happening?

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on 14th October 2025.

After this date, devices running Windows 10 won’t receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. While your systems may still function, they’ll no longer be protected, putting your business, data, and operations at serious risk.

What does this mean for your business?

Continuing to use Windows 10 after the cut-off date could lead to:

  • Increased cybersecurity risk – No updates mean vulnerabilities won’t be patched, making your business a target for cybercriminals.

  • Compliance issues – You may fall short of industry regulations or cyber insurance requirements.

  • Operational disruption – Outdated systems are more likely to slow down, crash or cause software compatibility issues.

  • Limited Microsoft 365 support – While Office apps will still work for now, future versions may not be supported on Windows 10.

What are your options?

  • Upgrade to Windows 11

If your current machines are compatible, a free upgrade is available. Windows 11 offers stronger security, faster performance, and better support for modern business tools.

  • Invest in new hardware

If your devices can’t run Windows 11, now is the time to plan replacements. Newer PCs are built for today’s workloads, and many suppliers offer trade-in schemes to ease the transition.

  • Extended Security Updates (ESU)

Microsoft offers paid security updates until October. But this is only a short-term solution, not a long-term strategy.

Our advice for businesses

At PCN Computer Services, we recommend acting well before the deadline to minimise risk and disruption.

  • Audit your devices now – Know what’s compatible and what’s not.

  • Make a migration plan – Budget for upgrades or replacements in advance.

  • Limit downtime – We’ll help manage backups, upgrades and installations with minimal impact on your day-to-day operations.

  • Don’t rely on ESUs – They delay the problem; they don’t solve it.

  • Prioritise security and compliance – Avoid being caught out by outdated systems.
